Canada is launching the CAN Work Philippines program, a new Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) pilot project aimed at expediting the processing of work permits for temporary foreign workers from the Philippines, allowing employers to hire skilled individuals more swiftly and address labor market shortages.
The recently unveiled CAN Work Philippines program, introduced seven months after the expansion of Canada’s visa-processing capacity in Manila, includes the hiring of approximately 50 workers and is part of Canada’s $74.6 million investment over five years, alongside $15.7 million in ongoing funding, to enhance application processing capacity both domestically and in the Indo-Pacific region; this move follows Canada’s decision in June 2023 to extend its Electronic Travel Authorization Program to the Philippines, granting more Filipinos visa-free air travel, and has received praise from Filipino officials, coinciding with the launch of the inaugural Philippines-Canada Friendship Week.
As part of its agreement with the Philippines, Canadian immigration is allocating $200,000 to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support the implementation of fair and ethical recruitment standards in the Philippines; this funding will facilitate training sessions promoting the IOM’s Fair and Ethical Recruitment Due Diligence Toolkit for organizations involved in talent recruitment in the country, aiming to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to global standards in the recruitment process, with a focus on safeguarding the rights and welfare of overseas Filipino workers, a crucial step in Canada’s ongoing commitment to ethical recruitment practices for temporary foreign workers and in line with its Immigration Levels Plan, which aims to welcome 465,000 permanent residents this year, 485,000 next year, and 500,000 in 2025.
